A few of the e-commerce sites I’ve built rely heavily on Google Product Search (aka Froogle, aka Google Base) for Search Engine Marketing. Google is a powerful e-commerce partner, and getting your products into their Product Search is relatively easy. With accurate product data and images, you can expect impressions and click-throughs on brand product searches with little effort. Here are a few tips for taking advantage of this free service from Google:
- If you’re selling brand name products, get the brand name into the product title and description. Searchers will use the brand name in their queries.
- Many users sort by price, so if you want to rank highly you need to have competitive prices. Bundling shipping into your products may hurt you in Product Search.
- If you can, include UPC. This can be a real chore with items like apparel where you might have differenct UPCs for each size/color.
- Some Universal Search SERPs (search engine results pages) include product search returns at the top, below Adwords but above organic returns. A combination of organic SEO, Adwords and Product Search can get your products in front of many eyes.
- Use e-commerce software that can automate the process of posting and updating your product database to Google Product Search. Google removes products after 30 days, so you’ll want to update often.
- Use custom and creative copy writing for product title descriptions to stand apart from the crowd
